BACKGROUND OF HON. JAY STUART DANKBERG (Judge, Civil Court, New York County, Ret.
Jay Stuart Dankberg re-entered the private practice of law in 1997 after working in the New York courts for almost twenty-five years (Law Assistant, Housing Court Judge, Judge of the Civil Court and Acting Justice of the Supreme Court).
After brushing up on the private practice methods and acquiring the skills to practice law in the computer age (as "of Counsel" with Finkelstein Newman LLP, a "boutique" real estate litigation firm), in February 1999, he opened his own law office (called "The Law Office of Jay Stuart Dankberg") at 1220 Broadway to resume a litigation practice that started with his admission to the Bar in 1970.
Presently, he looks fondly at having been and continuing to be a lecturer to Judges and Attorneys on Civil Practice, Personal Injury and Landlord-Tenant Law and other real estate litigation issues; a Lecturer at Colleges, Law Schools, civic and fraternal organizations; and a Judge at Moot Court competitions at New York, New York University, Columbia and Cardozo Law Schools. Jay has been appointed: Receiver, Referee, Guardian of the Person and Property and Court Evaluator regarding individuals allegedly having physical and/or emotional difficulties. He also volunteered to work pro bono representing many individuals and businesses affected by the September 1l' tragedy both in commercial litigation and for claims from the September 11th Victims Fund.
Jay has served as Past President to groups as diverse as the American Judges Foundation and B'Nai B'Rith Lawyers Unit. He was President for three years of a Manhattan Masonic Association (which last year contributed over $440,000 to worthy children's charities aiding those with cancer, learning disabilities and financial problems).
For these community, charitable, judicial, and legal activities, Jay has been a recipient of honors and awards from many diverse organizations. He is especially pleased that of the numerous decisions he wrote, over sixty (60) were published, many of which are considered to be "leading" in their particular legal area (such as Zenila Realty Corp v. Masterandrea, on the topic of "demand" in a nonpayment summary proceeding).
